Greener Gatherings: Green Meetings at La Mare

Green Meetings Certification, launched in 2021 by Green Tourism, is a specialised accreditation for venues and businesses hosting meetings and events. It reflects a commitment to sustainability, encouraging practices that limit the environmental and social impact of gatherings. Green Tourism, the world’s largest sustainable certification programme, has been delivering industry-leading sustainability accreditation and support for over 25 years. Their mission centres on promoting greener operations through advice on ethical buying, energy efficiency, and care for people, places, and the planet.

The Certification Process

Achieving Green Meetings Certification involves rigorous assessment and adherence to specific criteria. At La Mare Wine Estate, our journey towards certification has been driven by our commitment to sustainability and alignment with the Green Tourism ethos.

  1. Evidence Submission: We documented our sustainable practices, including initiatives such as converting all estate lighting to LED and incorporating motion sensors to optimise energy use. Our commitment extends to sustainable sourcing, like using oversized Jersey Royal Potatoes in our vodka production and emphasising local ingredients like Jersey honey.
  2. Expert Contributions: Our team collaborated to meet the required standards, focusing on biodiversity, energy efficiency, and waste reduction. For instance, our orchards are undergoing organic conversion, and we actively manage wildlife habitats.
  3. Assessment: Green Tourism practitioners, trained to the highest environmental standards, reviewed our submission. They evaluated our energy efficiency measures, renewable energy exploration, and efforts to promote sustainable transport.
  4. Feedback: Post-assessment, we received tailored recommendations to further enhance our practices, such as expanding renewable energy options and biodiversity initiatives.

Why Green Meetings Matter

Sustainable events are crucial in minimising environmental impact and fostering community engagement. At La Mare Wine Estate, Green Meetings Certification underscores our dedication to hosting environmentally conscious gatherings. It ensures:

  • Collaboration with local suppliers and businesses.
  • Promotion of conservation efforts through educational tours.
  • Reduction of resource usage and waste during events.

Green Meetings Certification Levels

Certification is awarded at three levels:

  • Bronze: Recognises foundational steps in sustainability.
  • Silver: Highlights advanced integration of eco-conscious practices.
  • Gold: Reflects exemplary leadership in environmental stewardship.

Each level demonstrates a significant commitment to sustainable event management.

Our Broader Commitment

Aligned with our Green Action Plan for 2024-2025, La Mare Wine Estate continues to:

  • Monitor energy usage monthly and adopt renewable energy sources.
  • Enhance water efficiency through smart irrigation and grey water recycling.
  • Reduce waste with expanded recycling programmes and reusable packaging.
  • Support biodiversity by managing hedgerows, installing wildlife boxes, and converting orchards to organic practices.
