Meet the Winemaker
La Mare Wine Estate is delighted to introduce our new Head Winemaker Jordi Sanvicens Moreno.
Born and raised in Catalonia, a nation in North Eastern Spain, which produces some of the most sought-after Spanish wines in the country, winemaking is part of Jordi’s lineage.
In 2006 Jordi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Viticulture and Enology and spent the next 16 years managing and designing vineyards all over the world including Perpignan, famous for fortified wines (Muscat de Rivesaltes, and Grenache de Maury), Bad-Bergzabern in the Upper Rhine Valley and in the vibrant vineyards of Clare Valley Australia.
No stranger to producing wine in both cooler and warmer climates. Jordi spent the last 6 years in Indonesia where he designed and tested vineyards to thrive in tropical weather.
While much cooler than Indonesia, Jersey is on average 2 degrees warmer than the south of England. The island is on the same latitude as north Champagne and Alsace and shares similar soil acidity to Penedes in Spain where Jordi also spent time producing Cava.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity at La Mare. My role here is to allow nature to do most of the work in the vineyard and then, with passion and respect, continue the journey from grape to glass.
I’m not personally attached to a particular approach to winemaking because it’s the grapes and the terroir that define the style. I do however aim to produce wine with personality and character, wines that tell a story; the sea, the air, the soil. My vision is to capture the essence of Jersey in our exceptional wines.”
La Mare’s Managing Director Tim Crowley commented; “At La Mare we have always prided ourselves on creating quality produce that celebrates the abundance of our island.
Creating quality local wine is dependent on many factors including the weather and terroir however the winemaker is instrumental in making the most of what Mother Nature blesses us with.
Jordi has an immense passion for his craft, and we are thrilled he has decided to start a new adventure here in Jersey.
