Waste & Recycling at La Mare Wine Estate

At La Mare Wine Estate, we are committed to treading lightly on our island home. From the vineyard to the winery, every decision we make is guided by a desire to minimise waste, reuse resources, and recycle wherever possible. By tracking our waste carefully, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also create opportunities to innovate and improve year after year.

Our Waste Baseline

We’ve measured and recorded our waste streams to understand where we stand today:

  • Scrap Metal: 4.5 tonnes (vineyard trellis and old equipment)

  • Cardboard: 17.2 tonnes

  • Tin: 1.5 tonnes

  • Plastics & Mixed Waste: currently recorded as general waste

This baseline gives us the foundation to set ambitious but realistic goals for the future.

Our Waste Reduction Targets

Scrap Metal (Trellis & Equipment)
We aim to reuse 50% of vineyard trellis before replacement by 2026, avoiding around 1.5 tonnes of scrap metal each year.

Cardboard
By 2027, we plan to reduce cardboard waste by 20%, cutting annual volumes from 17.2 tonnes to around 13.8 tonnes through better supplier engagement and reuse.

Tin
We will continue to recycle 100% of tin waste, ensuring nothing is sent to landfill.

Plastics & Mixed Waste
Starting in 2025, we will improve segregation and monitoring. By 2030, our goal is to cut general waste volumes by 40% — equivalent to diverting around 4 tonnes of material from landfill every year.

How We’re Making It Happen

  • Waste is tracked quarterly and reviewed annually to measure progress.
  • Cardboard and metal are segregated and recycled through specialist partners.

  • Staff are trained to reduce, reuse, and recycle across the Estate.

  • We are working closely with suppliers to reduce packaging at source.

Our Commitment

These targets are just the beginning. By continually monitoring, sharing our progress, and holding ourselves accountable, we’re making sure that La Mare Wine Estate not only produces award-winning wines and spirits, but also contributes positively to Jersey’s environment and community.
