Monitoring Our Energy Use at La Mare Wine Estate
At La Mare Wine Estate, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Monitoring our energy and resource use allows us to make informed decisions, reduce waste, and continuously improve the way we operate, from the vineyard to our production facilities.

We record our electricity, water, and fuel usage monthly, tracking trends, spotting anomalies, and measuring progress against clear reduction targets. By visualising this data in easy-to-understand charts, we make the impact of our efforts tangible. For example, reducing electricity by 10,000 kWh is equivalent to saving 5,400 kg of CO₂, the same weight as 11 Jersey cows.
Our Energy Consumption Targets
- Electricity: Reduce total vineyard and estate electricity consumption by 10% per year for the next 3 years.
-
Gas & LPG: Cut heating fuel usage by 15% over 3 years through efficiency upgrades and smarter processes.
-
Fuel for Vehicles & Machinery: Reduce diesel and unleaded use by 10% by 2026 via fuel-efficient machinery and operational planning.
-
Water: Reduce water use in irrigation and production by 15% over 3 years with better monitoring and drip irrigation systems.
-
Carbon Emissions: Achieve a 10% reduction in CO₂ emissions per unit of wine produced within 3 years.
We are exploring advanced monitoring tools such as Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) to provide detailed, daily data and support ongoing improvements. Regularly sharing our energy usage with staff and visitors helps everyone understand the tangible benefits of small changes.
For inspiration and best practice, we also look to the Carbon Trust and the Energy Saving Trust.
At La Mare, sustainability is not just a goal, it’s a journey, woven into every decision we make, from vine to bottle.
